Durango, CO: The City of Durango has received an excellence in fluoridation award from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment for 2021.
The City supports and follows the guidance and recommendations of various agencies which include the World Health Organization, American Medical Association, Centers for Disease Control, American Dental Association, and other professional organizations in the medical community, for the fluoridation of public water supplies as a public health benefit.
Water fluoridation promotes good oral health, which affects our ability to eat, speak, smile, and show emotion.
The City handles the application of fluoride in a responsible, effective, and reliable manner that includes monitoring of natural and added levels of fluoride as mandated by the State of Colorado, and other federal laws. The decision to fluoridate has been part of a robust public discussion, and electoral process, and ultimately accepted through the Durango City Council's decision-making processes.
Fluoridated community water systems adjust fluoride to approximately 0.7 milligrams per liter. Sodium fluoride is a dry additive typically used in small water systems. The sodium fluoride product that the city uses meets American National Standard Institute
