(UPDATED 8/10, 7:30 a.m.): An injured man has been taken in custody in connection with the shooting at the Red Cliff Apartments on Wednesday in Durango.

Police are not releasing the name of the suspect. A resident called the dispatch center just before 9 p.m. Wednesday evening saying a bloody male subject was on their property in the 2800 block of County Road 250, and saying he was hurt. The injured person then left. Police officers, and deputies with the La Plata County Sheriff's Office, responded to the property, which is across the Animas River from where the shooting occurred earlier in the day. A code red alert was issued to residents within a 1-mile radius to shelter in place while officers and deputies searched for the suspect.

While the search was occurring a man who had been identified by police as a person of interest in the shooting was in phone contact with the police and said he was willing to turn himself in. Police launched a drone and quickly found the man. He was taken into custody and provided medical attention.

A shooting in Durango early Wednesday left a man with serious injuries and the suspect, considered armed and dangerous, still at large.

Durango police officers responded at 12:50 a.m. Wednesday morning to reports of shots fired at the Red Cliff Apartments, 5800 Main Ave. When officers arrived, they located a male victim inside an apartment with multiple gunshot wounds.

The victim, whose name is being withheld, was transported to Mercy Regional Medical Center. He was later flown to Centura-Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs with serious injuries. The suspect was described as a white male, mid-late 20s, approximately 5'9"-5'10" tall, with short blonde hair, skinny build, stubble facial hair, baggy clothing, white flat brim hat, and is possibly in possession of a white backpack. He was last seen leaving the area southbound on foot. The suspect should be considered armed and dangerous.

Detectives with the Durango Police Department and agents from the Colorado Bureau of Investigations are on scene investigating the shooting.  Anyone with information related to this incident, including any relevant doorbell camera footage, is encouraged to contact Durango Police detectives at (970) 375-4750. Today’s lower-priority calls to the police department may have a delayed response time due to the nature of this active crime scene investigation.
