Durango, CO: Durango councilors are scheduled to discuss on Jan. 17 reallocating the city’s lodgers’ tax in its afternoon study session and may vote on preliminary approval for a 153-unit housing development at its regular  meeting.

With the approaching April 4 election, council will discuss drafting potential ballot language to re-allocate lodgers’ tax funds. The money is currently allocated:

  • 55% for sustainable tourism marketing.
  • 20% for transportation.
  • 14% for arts and cultural events.
  • 11% for any of the above purposes or as council may determine.

A survey contracted by council interviewed 300 voting age residents and is scheduled to be discussed in detail at the Jan. 17 study session.

For the regular meeting:

  • Visit Durango will give its third quarter report to council, in which it boasts an 80% hotel occupancy rate, 33,434 visitors to the welcome center, and a tourism sentiment score that is the highest in the state of Colorado.
  • Council will open a public hearing and vote on preliminary approval of the North Main Apartments. If developed the North Main Apartments would provide 153 housing units located at 3801 Main Avenue, next to the CDOT regional office building. The project would have 84 one-bedroom, one-bathroom units and 69 two-bedroom, two-bathroom units in 12 buildings. Reviewing this project aligns with the city’s strategic plan by taking preliminary steps to enhance multigenerational community workforce housing, as well as attainable and affordable housing overall.
  • Council will review and on whether to authorize a new lease agreement with Agile Space Industries at the airport that would expand Agile’s lease of premises from 76,394 square feet to 451,308 square feet. The change in square footage would change the total annal rent for Agile Space industries from $22,905 to $74,466. The proposed lease amendment supports Durango’s aviation strategy of increasing revenue generation and diversification to ensure long-term fiscal sustainability for the airport enterprise fund.
