Is fried turkey on your Thanksgiving menu? The city will have a collection site for used cooking oil 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 26 and Saturday, Nov. 27 at the Santa Rita Administration Building at the north end of Santa Rita Park, 105 South Camino Del Rio.
Pouring cooking oil down sink drains can result in clogged pipes in homes and the city’s sewer system.
“Oil and grease has caused over 60% of sewer backups within city sewer mains over the past five years,” said Jarrod Biggs, the assistant utilities director. “Dumping this waste down the drain can also wreak havoc on individual plumbing systems and make for a bad holiday.”
The Santa Rita Water Reclamation Facility will use the oil to produce methane and generate power using the facility’s microturbines. Learn more about the city’s Fats, Oils and Grease program at DurangoGov.org/FOG
