DRO Terminal Development Project
The Durango-La Plata County Airport (DRO) initiated a formal terminal development design project in September 2021. As a gateway and first impression to Durango, Southwest Colorado, and the entire Four Corners region, DRO must provide appropriately sized and modern infrastructure to support the growing demand for air service in our community. Passenger traffic at DRO has more than doubled over the past 20 years, and the terminal facilities are feeling the pressure of this growth.
The intent of this project is to move forward with the design and construction to alleviate congestion and improve the passenger experience, while also completing conceptual and schematic design on future development phases to allow for refined project planning, scoping, cost estimates and timelines for future expansion.
As we progress through the terminal design project at DRO, we want to engage with our community as much as possible to share in the excitement of this project that will make the airport the best possible entryway to our region. We welcome community input on the design process and have multiple options for feedback:
- A public open house to review the terminal design was held March 16, 2022, at Durango City Hall. The public was invited to the open house to review design progress, speak with airport and consultant staff, offer comments or ask questions. As the design progresses, future community events may be held to solicit additional in-person feedback.
- Monthly Airport Commission meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month. Public comment is taken at each meeting and terminal design will be a frequent topic of formal discussion during 2022. Meeting information can be found at DurangoGov.org/Meetings.
- A Design Review Committee has been established for this project. The committee is a small group consisting of members of the surrounding community, and is intended to help provide local knowledge and insight to our design team from Mead & Hunt. The committee will function as a sub-committee of the Airport Advisory Commission. Committee members include representatives from the Southern Ute Indian Tribe and the Airport Commission, a local architect, experienced local commercial development professionals, and a local expert on environmentally sustainable building.
