Durango Public Library’s Summer Reading Programs Begin June 2

Durango Public Library’s summer reading programs for children, teens, and adults will run from June 2 through July 28. Registration is open now at www.durangopubliclibrary.org.

The “Libraries Rock” program, for birth through Elementary School, encourages kids to read or have someone read to them all summer long. Reading together builds pre-reading skills in young children, and studies show that older children who read during the summer months go back to school with improved reading skills. Reading over the summer is important, and the library can help make it fun and exciting, too.

Children who log ten hours of reading will earn a free book, a tote bag, a day pass to the Rec Center, and a chance to win one of two $50 gift cards from Maria’s Bookshop. Each additional ten hours of reading will earn another entry in the grand prize drawing. The “Libraries Rock” program also includes lots of fun, free events in June and July.

The teen program gives youth in Middle and High School a chance to read and win too. Teens who log twenty hours of reading will earn a free book, a tote bag, a chance to win one of two $50 Maria’s Bookshop gift cards, and a day pass to the Rec Center. Each additional twenty hours of reading earns another chance to win the grand prize. The library will also host special teen events every Thursday from June 7 through July 26.

This year adults can join the fun with their own reading program.  Adults, age 17 and up, are invited to enter each book read this summer for a try in a weekly prize drawing. All participants will also be eligible for the grand prize of a $50 Maria's Bookshop gift card and a Kindle E-reader.

Sunnyside and Fort Lewis Mesa Branch Libraries will also be offering summer reading programs beginning in June.

Summer reading programs are made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Durango Public Library. This year’s programs are also supported by Durango Parks and Recreation and Maria’s Bookshop. All Durango Public Library programs are free and open to the public. Visit www.durangopubliclibrary.org for program details and online registration, or call the library at 970-375-3380.
