City seeking public input on potentially allowing ADUs in more neighborhoods

The City of Durango will host a public information meeting on Thursday, April 19, 2018 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Durango Public Library to discuss allowing Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) in additional neighborhoods. Durango legalized ADUs, also known as granny flats or in-law suites, in 2014 in certain neighborhoods. There are now close to 300 legal ADUs in the East Animas City, Old Durango and Avenues neighborhoods. The City is now exploring the possibility of allowing ADUs in the Crestview, Riverview, Hillcrest, and other neighborhoods. At the public meeting, City staff will explain how ADUs could function in these other neighborhoods and their potential impacts. The meeting is the City’s chance to hear directly from the residents, gauge the level of support or opposition, and receive feedback about how to develop an expanded ADU program.

An online survey concerning expanding ADUs is posted at www.durangogov.org/virtualcityhall. The survey is open from April 5 – May 6, 2018. The City will include the public’s input into any potential ordinance. There will be public hearings with Planning Commission and City Council before allowing ADUs in additional neighborhoods. The City will post online any proposed code language, and will provide additional opportunities for public comments about ADUs during the entirety of this process.
