Citizens’ Police Academy

The Durango Police Department is once again offering citizens the opportunity to participate in the Citizens’ Police Academy. This year marks the 20th Session.

This unique opportunity is designed to give residents of La Plata County a firsthand look at how the Durango Police Department works. Citizens who sign up for the academy commit to one night a week for twelve weeks while they go through the program.

Students learn a variety of topics related to law enforcement in Durango. The program is designed to increase understanding, through education, between citizens and police. The curriculum is taught by members of the Durango Police Department; students meet and get to know many of the officers. Students also have the opportunity to ride along with officers on patrol to see firsthand what Durango police officers do.

The Durango Police Department is currently accepting applications for the Citizens’ Police Academy Session XX which starts March 8, 2017. Applications are due by Feb 28, 2017. Applications can be filled out online at the City of Durango website or picked up in person at the Durango Police Department. For more information, call 375-4701.
